Finally saw Avatar....

(Netflix delayed the release a month so the studio could get more obscene amounts of money from DVD sales). I'm rather underwhelmed. Yes, it's pretty. Yes, it's pretty cutting edge CG stuff. It's long, and while I'd expected that in a Cameron epic, at lot of that time is pure CG self-gratification. The acting is generally good, and I got a kick out of seeing Sigourney Weaver again. But man oh man, the characters are so stereotyped that I am amazed the actors got as much as they did out of them. The plot completely unoriginal even when limited to the field of science fiction. I've seen it done so many times, and maybe I'm cynical but I was a little annoyed at Cameron's rose-tinted glasses happy ending. It felt a little condescending. The music wasn't all that special, completely typical Horner. Given how groundbreaking this movie was, I kind of wish he'd gone somewhere new for the score. Also, given how much research allegedly went into creating this alien planet and race, did anyone else question the feasibility of giant horses in a completely vertical, thick jungle terrain?

But again, this movie made obscene amounts of money, so what do I know?

That's pretty much my opinion. Writing not great but dang it was pretty. And the ending didn't make sense; won't the humans just reinvade whenever they feel like it? But dang... pretty. =)
