talk to me, people...

Okay. I need some feedback, advice, whatever you got...

I live in a house. I have a newer HP desktop computer and an older but still virile Mac powerbook. The only internet access I have is when my neighbor forgets to turn the WEP encrytion on on his wireless.

I would like to get internet access legitamately and reliably.

I do not have, nor do I want to pay for, cable or satellite TV.

I do not have an active land-line, and I don't particularily want to pay for one, though there is of course a telephone line running to the house.

I really do not wish to spend more than $30 a month on internet.

I know next to nothing about computers, and even less about networking...

So, what are my options? Tell me about your ISPs. Good, bad, slow, fast, expensive?

Do not get Clearwire, it is notoriously unreliable. Alas, you'll probably have to up your minimum expenditure to about $35 if my memory suits me. I have cable internet with charter, and I recall you can get 5meg for like... 20, 25, but you have to commit, and you have to pay a $5/$10 fee for NOT having charter cable. I know charter has PLENTY of issues, and some people hate it, but I had DSL for about 6 years and they didn't even OFFER speed over 1.5meg in my area, and I never, EVER clocked near 1meg from them even then- we were also paying $45-$50. *NOW* We pay something like $43 a month for 10meg with the fees for not having cable and the modem rental. It's totally worth it.
