talk to me, people...

Okay. I need some feedback, advice, whatever you got...

I live in a house. I have a newer HP desktop computer and an older but still virile Mac powerbook. The only internet access I have is when my neighbor forgets to turn the WEP encrytion on on his wireless.

I would like to get internet access legitamately and reliably.

I do not have, nor do I want to pay for, cable or satellite TV.

I do not have an active land-line, and I don't particularily want to pay for one, though there is of course a telephone line running to the house.

I really do not wish to spend more than $30 a month on internet.

I know next to nothing about computers, and even less about networking...

So, what are my options? Tell me about your ISPs. Good, bad, slow, fast, expensive?

Uh... if you pay for internet on your phone, then many of them can be hooked to your computer to give it internet access. The problem with this is that it's about dial-up speed... but you don't have to have any land-line, dsl, or cable attached to it. Many cell-phone companies also sell little wireless G3 usb modems... but they're just as expensive as just biting the bullet and getting cable or dsl.

I'm not an expert by any means, but as far as I know, you either have to pay through the nose for cable, dsl, or G3 access... or you get a phone line and get dial-up, if you can find any services in town still offering it.
