Oy, an update.

So I finally finished A Canticle for Leibowitz. It's been lingering on my nightstand for a while, which is rather unusual for me in that I usually devour a book over a day or two. This one was hard to read continually. So, every once in a while I'd pick it up and read a chapter, then find a new book and leave the first. I think I just had a hard time altering my perceptions to Miller's strange, cynical reality. Because, dude, even compared to other post-apocalyptic fiction written in the cold war era, this book is twisted strange. The narrative is disjointed, because you pretty much have to start over twice. There are a lot of characters, and a lot of plots, though not as many as, say, your Russian epic. Anyway, it's very gritty, though I don't know if I'd call it dark. It isn't a happy story, and very cynical, though not completely. Lots of religion, morality, philosophy, though it isn't done heavy-handed. And mutants. Can't have post-nuclear without mutants. If I were a good little Catholic, I suppose I should be offended. What creeps me out, though, is that today I happen to agree with Miller's whole point about the cyclical nature of human history. And future. And normally, I'm not nearly so cynical.

Oh, and if you haven't seen this before, it's worth pimping. Not that the internet needs another example of the narrow-mindedness so unfortunately associated with the Christian right, but I was amused by the rampant hypocrisy of the reviews. Apparently, and this may come as a surprise, sex is the sign of a bad writer. Also, paganism. Also, women who write scifi or fantasy with female protagonists are feminazis. Wow, guess that pretty much leaves out everyone but Tolkien. Woo.

Assuming YSI doesn't freeze my laptop, here is the song I'm listening to now. It's rather eclectic.

I'm a fan of post-ap books but I could not finish that one. Could hardly start that one. Dang, if I'd'a known there were going to be mutants I might have perservered. ^^

Yeah, people with two heads and everything. Oh, and I forgot that there are cannibals, too.

ironic oddities
You know what... My father loaned that to me a couple of years ago- and I read it pretty quickly... and Suddenly EVERYONE is talking about it. He let me keep his battered OLD paperback because his sci-fi book club sent him a pretty, hard-bound copy for some anniversary or whatever...

Reading the last Dark Tower right now. I ran through those like it was nobody's business... omg.

Ugh... Let us never talk about that site again! I heart Harry Potter. (Much more than LOTR...) Gotta run before the lightning comes from the right to strike me down...
