Blow me away...

...it's like, tornado-ish out here. Fences and trees down right and left. I could hear something rattling loose on the roof all day.

So, the local orchestra, the Reno Philharmonic, as if anyone outside Reno knows what I'm talking about, is holding a conductor audition next season. This is both a shame, because I kind of liked most of where Jekowsky was headed with the rep, but also tres exciting, because the group is quite good for such an isolated area, and there was a lot of interest from quality candidates. But the most exciting thing? Three of the five finalists are women. Which in the classical music world is a noteworthy thing, given that gender bias is alive and well, and there are even a couple of hold-out European orchestras that still don't audition women.

That's not to say that I would mind someone like Vladimir Jurowski. Or Gustavo Dudamel. God knows we need more young conductors.

This time, though, I'm really rooting for the women. Because Reno really needs that step forward.
