Random rant ...

What the hell is going on with photography these days? Has the focus button/control/ring/'whatever become obsolete or are people just too damn lazy to take the extra second to focus. I swear, everything is so freaking blurry I can't bring myself to even try to critique anymore. God forbid I mention that, because people inevitibly play the "It's art, you communist!" card and I get too pissed to bother. Seriously, there is a HUGE freaking difference between focus used as an element of composition and just emo blurry. For one, it's an incredibly strong element and thus can be overused and ruin your picture. Also, there's a way *gasp* to choose parts of your picture to focus on and still throw non-important backgrounds out of focus. It's called depth of field and ISN'T THAT HARD TO MASTER, especially given how utterly idiot-proof digital cameras are these days.

I take bad pictures. You kind of have to, in order to learn how to take good ones. And there are times I'll shoot the same scene three or fours times so I have a margin of error. I do not; however, post crappy throwaway shots with not even the most basic of color/contrast/exposure correction on a serious gallery site/community/forum and then claim it's high art. I'm sorry, it's just plain pixel crap. I may not like all of the art photography I see, but I can recognise it as art nonetheless and always find something in it I either like or admire.

High art is not simply your emo/goth girlfriend/boyfriend smoking a ciggarette shot in a dark room with a sense of focus Monet would be hard pressed to match. And making your crappy photo black and white isn't art either, as black and white tends to expose flaws that might have been overlooked in color.

Honestly, is everything fucking quantity over quality nowadays?

Sadly, the answer to this is yes. Quantity pays more.

I had a nice long rant to go here, but no one wants to hear my opinion on publicly-funded art.
